Weightless Illumination
Weightless Illumination is a project that is to revive the tradition of the paper lantern making in Korea. The tradition is dying out and neglected due to its labour intensive and slow manufacturing process. The idea was originally conceived by The Akari series - Isamu Noguchi’s modern reinterpretation of traditional Japanese paper lantern.
Studying design in the UK and an Internship placement in Denmark gave me a whole new design perspective to my own culture. I, as a person, born and raised in South Korea, I realised how little I knew about the design heritage of my own culture and the value of it. This project is my reevaluation on something that was always around me but overlooked.
